Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 vs Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 – Not like a different class

Gadgetren – The use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 chipset as a kitchen runner for the POCO F5 device that was released a while ago is quite strange to some people.

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 comes as a replacement for the high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset that was previously used consecutively by two generations of mobile phones before the POCO F5, namely the POCO F4 and POCO F3. So it’s natural that some people regret it.

If you look at the numbering, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 at first glance looks like a downgrade from the Snapdragon 870 which is a class higher. That’s just not entirely true because the chipset actually has several superior aspects.

From the performance on offer, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 already seems higher than its predecessor. This chipset can only be driven up to 2.91GHz, which is slower than the Snapdragon 870 which can reach 3.2Hz. However, the basic architecture, GPU and build belonging to the new generation of Snapdragon are more up-to-date.

For those of you who don’t know, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 already uses the Qualcomm Kryo architecture that was developed based on ARM Cortex-X2, Cortex-A710and Cortex-A510 together Qualcomm Adreno 725. While the Snapdragon 870 is still based on the Qualcomm Kryo 585 with ARM Cortex-A77 and Cortex-A55 as Qualcomm Adreno 650.

When developing the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2, Qualcomm also used the process 4nm construction where technically it will be more efficient and energy efficient than 7nm construction which is still used in the development of the Snapdragon 870 to provide a better ratio of performance and power consumption.

With a more updated core base, GPU and build, of course, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 is able to outperform the Snapdragon 870. This is shown by the average results of the POCO F5 AnTuTu benchmark test which is much higher compared to the POCO F4 and the POCO F3.

Collect performance evaluation page based on AnTuTu v9 test results, POCO F5 with Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 can touch scored 948,473 points. While POCO F3 only with Snapdragon 870 700,721 points and even POCO F4 is even lower in numbers 692,933 points so that you can see the performance of each of them is quite further.

A number of technologies carried by the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 are also noted to be more capable. For example, in terms of connectivity, the chipset is equipped with Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 which brings some improvements from Qualcomm FastConnect 6800 courtesy of the Snapdragon 870.

FastConnect 6900 is at least supported WiFi 4 to WiFi 6E with access speed up to 3.6 Gbps and has already brought Bluetooth 5.3. More up to date than the FastConnect 6800 it is still based on WiFi 4 to WiFi 6 maximum speed 1,774 Gbps and Bluetooth 5.2 which in his time was actually already high.

In the camera department, the Snapdragon 870’s Qualcomm Spectra 480 is also slightly inferior to the Qualcomm Spectra’s Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. Both support single-lens configurations up to 200MP and 4K @ 60fps video recording, but have quite different settings.

The Spectra 480 in this case only supports dual lenses up to resolution 25MP or single 64MP for multi-frame noise reduction (MFNR) and zero shutter lag (ZSL) settings of 30 fps. It was badly missed by Spectra’s Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 which can accommodate up to 64MP + 36MP the 108MP for a similar configuration.

For charging, it has also brought the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 Qualcomm Quick Charge 5. This technology is able to make the device charge faster than the Snapdragon 870 which only supports it Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ for similar battery capacity.

But of course, the Snapdragon 870 in this regard is not completely outdated. The higher-end chipset still has a lot of advantages compared to the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. One of them is the support for a display screen that can be used by a device.

As with Qualcomm’s high-end chipsets in general, the Snapdragon 870 already supports screen resolutions up to 4K Ultra HD @60Hz the QHD+ @144Hz. While the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 is only able to handle images up to QHD+ @120Hz so it is more limited.

In addition, the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G modem used by the Snapdragon 870 also supports access speeds of up to 7.5 Gbps. Faster compared to Qualcomm Snapdragon X62 5G on Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 which can only touch numbers 4.4 Gbps.
